Social App

2022

Overview

Driver helps you find someone to drive you around in your own car whenever you cannot or wouldn’t drive for any reason.

Where It All Started

When I go out with friends I often take the role of a designated driver and refrain from drinking, to stay sober. Once I was tempted to drink so I had to take a taxi to get everyone back home safely and another one in the morning to pick up my car where I left it, all of which cost me a fortune.

This was when I came up with the idea of a social app which would offer you available drivers who would get there on their own quickly and drive your car for you whenever you feel unfit or unwilling to drive.

Users Survey

I surveyed 115 potential users, of whom 92 percent lived in the city, 70 percent drove their own cars “extensively” or “very extensively”, and 40 percent often took the role of designated drivers on night outs or took a taxi home when no-one else volunteered.

Survey findings indicated that most potential users (mostly between the ages of 26 and 34) would have no problem letting another person drive their car, not even a stranger, providing that the driver has a clean insurance and criminal record and is highly rated by other users.

The vast majority of the potential users surveyed said they would use this service after a night out.

The Solution

When the driver sets out, the Share button will come on display for the user to select a friend with whom to share the route, who will receive the driver's details in a message, view the user's route online and report if anything goes wrong.

When the driver arrived at the meeting point, the Emergency tool will come on. The user can click Emergency button to end the trip if anything goes wrong or else alert Customer Service or the police.

The Emergency button will remain on display throughout the trip.

The Challenge

Many potential users were concerned about safety and personal security. They felt their designated driver's insurance and criminal record was highly important in terms of harm to their person or damage to their car. I addressed these concerns as I will show below.

The Design Justification

Since the potential users of this app are of a highly specific age range and would mostly use it after a night out, I chose the Dark Mode style for my design.

I have also designed a Light Mode in a softer, more traditional color scheme, to inspire confidence.

The actual design mode can be re-set on registration completion or subsequently under the app settings.

Selection Of The Driver

On entry of the relevant details, the app will locate a driver available nearby, who has reviewed the conditions and accepted the hire.

The user can then select the type of small vehicle which the driver could use to arrive at the meeting point based on the space permitted in the user's car trunk (e.g. scooter or electric bike) and the payment method.

The user may now accept the driver or cancel and search for another one.

End Of Trip

At destination, an End screen will be displayed to remind the user to collect the car keys and rate the driver, followed by a Tipping screen. To close, the user must confirm receipt of own car keys back or report anything that went wrong.

The Route Search

On login, the app will display a Route Search screen where the designation can be entered, the parking address updated in case the user is somewhere else, and the drive scheduled.
